  5. Ribosomal protein L22 is one of the proteins from the large ribosomal subunit.
  6. In Escherichia coli, L22 is known to bind 23S rRNA.  It belongs to a family of
  7. ribosomal proteins  which,  on  the  basis  of  sequence similarities [1,2,3],
  8. groups:

  10.  - Eubacterial L22.
  11.  - Archaebacterial L22.
  12.  - Algal and plant chloroplast L22 (in legumes L22  is  encoded in the nucleus
  13.    instead of the chloroplast).
  14.  - Cyanelle L22.

  16.  - Mammalian L23.
  17.  - Yeast YL17.

  19. As a  signature  pattern,  we  selected  a  conserved region located in the C-
  20. terminal section of these proteins.
